However, the physiological change elicited was one of decreasing autonomic activity, not increasing, as high SC levels tended to fall across the trial in both the real and sham conditions. Based on previous research (Sierra et al., 2002) which cites low baseline SCRs in people with DPD, we propose the possibility of two physiological subtypes of depersonalisation; 1) a 'hypo' group with attenuated physiological response, and 2) a 'hyper' group showing similar physiology to anxiety disorders. Based on this conjecture, we propose in future studies, tailoring the biofeedback technique depending on patients' initial baseline skin conductance measures, i.e. patients showing a highly labile SC profile to undergo a hypoarousal protocol, in contrast, patients with low SC baseline measures to use a hyperarousal biofeedback intervention. Our results suggest that Depersonalisation poses as a highly complex disorder whose pathogenesis is likely to arise from a combination of biological and psychological components.
